What an auto transport broker does
It is rare for an individual looking for a car transport service on the web to speak with anyone other than an auto transport broker. The reason why you'll rarely reach a carrier or a driver personally is that a carrier/driver's full-time job is to drive their truck, therefore, they rarely market their services online. A broker, however, has two jobs: Marketing for the auto transport industry and booking customers to connect with their drivers.
Choosing the right auto transport broker
Depending on which broker you choose will determine the quality of the carrier they hire for you. If you're working with a greedy broker, they're likely to hold back a larger sum of your total price and offer a very low rate to the carrier. This may seem inconsequential at first, but the price a carrier is offered is corollated with the quality of the carrier you end up with. Drivers/carriers with an overall low rating on the nationwide database are forced to haul vehicles for less than the fair amount because no broker (in their right mind) would give a fair paying haul to a carrier with a 3-star rating over a carrier with a pristine 5-star rating. What an auto transport carrier does
An auto transport carrier is responsible for physically hauling your vehicle from its' origin to its' final destination. Their job is to arrive on time, take a detailed inventory of the condition of your vehicle, load your car, and deliver on-time and safely. The carrier is also responsible for having cargo insurance should your vehicle be damaged while in transport. Generally speaking, auto transport carriers carry cargo insurance of $100,000 to $250,000 depending on their trailer and how many vehicles it can haul. Put it this way: If you and I are a trucker, we're likely to request the vehicles paying more first, whereas all other (broker) listings paying less move down the list. On average customers who give us 1-14 business days to retrieve their vehicle (rather than the normal 1-5) see an overall rate of $100 less than the regular price.
- Another way to save some dough is by meeting the driver somewhere more convenient for him. Say you live an hour or two outside a metropolitan city but you're willing to meet the driver in the big city, you're looking at saving, on average, about $100-$150. By eliminating the dead-head of the truck driver, thereby saving him fuel and time, you'll pay a lower rate for transport.
